Don’t Let the Sun Beat You Home is a one-woman show that celebrates the resilience of Black women in America. Alex Tha Great’s original choreopoem investigates the five major killers of Black women–chronic illness, childbirth, stress, police violence, and suicide–to luminate the rampant experiences of Black women and the complexities of overcoming hardships. The title references the phrase, “Be home before the streetlights come one,” a common saying in Black households warning kids of the dangers that lurk after dark. The show aims to remind audiences to brave the night, in order to reap the rewards when the sun rises. As Psalms 30:5 states, “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
